Fatal accident rate per 10 million flights in the EU/EFTA and third country operated scheduled passenger operations

Despite some recent disasters, flying remains one of the safest forms of transport and the EU has an excellent safety record. As illustrated in Figure 1, the fatal accident rate in the countries of the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is much lower than in the rest of the world, and has been practically stable since 2010. In the past decade, the average rate of fatal accidents in the EU and EFTA has been 1.8 per 10 million flights, compared to 1.9 in North America, 6.3 in Asia, 15.5 in the Middle East and 38.3 in Africa.
