The US and Canada together accounted for 14 % of global oil production in 2012, more than Saudi Arabia (13%). Tight oil accounts for more than a third of US crude oil production. About 10% of Canada’s oil production comes from tight oil, and 56% from tar sands (see text box above). Natural gas liquids make a significant contribution to the US liquid fuels supply, comparable to the share of tight oil. The US is dependent on imports for roughly 40% of its oil consumption, while Canada is an oil exporter, with the US as its main customer. Together, the two countries produce around two thirds of their combined oil consumption.
