Demographic change 2000-2010, EU27 population aged 15-29

In January 2014, almost 90 million young
people (aged 15-29) lived in the European
Union (EU). This represents an average of 18%, but the proportion varies across countries.
Worryingly, the decline in the young population which started 30 years ago has continued to increase. Between 2010 and 2014, the 15-19 year-old cohort was the most affected, with an average decrease of 7%.
Central, eastern and southern EU countries suffered the largest drops (see Figure 1).
